01

Origins

Launched in August 1969, the Dacia 1300 was a Renault 12 built under licence at Mioveni, and its arrival mattered enormously. Front-wheel drive, a 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine, a proper four-door saloon body and, from 1973, an estate — it was a straightforwardly modern car by the standards of the day, and it was Romania's own.

Design and engineering

The Renault agreement ran out in the late 1970s and Ceaușescu's regime, committed to self-sufficiency, declined to renew it. Dacia kept building the same car anyway, restyling it repeatedly with locally designed front and rear ends as the 1310, 1410 and later variants, and improving it hardly at all. By the 1980s it was badly outdated, poorly built and produced with whatever materials the command economy could supply, but there was nothing else to buy: waiting lists ran for years and a used 1300 could cost more than a new one.

In production

A pickup version, and briefly a sports coupe and other one-off derivatives, were built alongside. The core saloon and estate stayed in production in one form or another until 2004, when the Logan replaced them — thirty-five years on a single 1969 design.

Legacy

In Romania the car occupies a place no rival can, remembered simultaneously as a symbol of the Ceaușescu years and as the thing that made a family holiday possible.
