01

Origins

The Duster arrived in 2010 doing something nobody else was willing to do: selling a genuine high-riding, optionally all-wheel-drive SUV for the price of a small family hatchback. It used the same low-cost Logan-derived engineering as the rest of the Dacia range, with long-travel suspension, generous ground clearance and a body built from simple shapes.

Design and engineering

The all-wheel-drive versions were the ones that made the reputation. With a locking centre coupling and short overhangs, the Duster could follow far more expensive machinery down a rutted track, and it did so without the electronic terrain modes that had become standard elsewhere. Front-drive versions covered the much larger group of buyers who wanted the stance and the space and never left tarmac.

In production

It was sold under several badges depending on the market — Renault in Russia and South America, Nissan in India as the Terrano — which spread development costs across territories with very different roads and expectations. Pickup conversions followed in some markets, sold alongside the SUV.

Legacy

Rivals responded by launching cheaper entry trims, which mostly demonstrated how hard the Duster's cost base was to match. Two further generations refined the packaging, added hybrid options and improved the crash structure, but the proposition never changed: the most car-shaped tool you could buy for the money.

The facts that define it.
