Origins

David Brown — a Yorkshire industrialist sharing a famous name with Aston Martin's saviour, coincidentally — launched his Speedback GT in 2014: Jaguar XKR underpinnings rebodied in hand-formed aluminium recalling the DB5 era's long-nosed elegance, trimmed in Coventry to bespoke order at a price beyond 500,000 pounds. The supercharged V8 gave modern pace beneath deliberately vintage manners; a fold-out picnic seat in the tail completed the Goldfinger fantasy. Critics debated whether it was design homage or pastiche; buyers in the marque's intended market — those wanting sixties aesthetics without sixties reliability — proved sufficient for boutique production at Silverstone. The Speedback established British 'retro-luxe' coachbuilding's modern template: heritage as specification, engineered on someone else's proven platform.
