Origins

Joop Donkervoort began building Lotus Seven-derived cars in 1978, and the D8 line from 1993 completed the transformation from kit descendant to authentic constructor: progressively bespoke chassis and bodywork culminating in Audi turbocharged power — the 1.8T initially, later the five-cylinder 2.5 TFSI in the D8 GTO of 2013 — delivering weight-to-power figures that embarrassed hypercars; a D8 lapped the Nürburgring faster than almost any road car of its late-2000s moment. Carbon construction deepened; prices climbed to match the engineering. Built in Lelystad in the hundreds per decade, D8s serve a clientele wanting maximum analogue intensity with Germanic reliability. The line made Donkervoort the Seven idiom's most serious interpreter — the tribute that became its own tradition.
