Origins
When the Sportage arrived in 1993 the compact SUV barely existed as a category. Kia built it on a separate ladder frame with rear-wheel drive as standard and four-wheel drive available, using Mazda-derived mechanicals, and offered it as a five-door wagon and briefly as a short three-door convertible. It was a genuine small off-roader at a price that undercut Japanese rivals, and it gave Kia its first meaningful presence in Western markets.
