Origins

The brief was cost. Fiat wanted a basic car to sit below its superminis and replace the elderly 126 and 133, and Giugiaro's answer was to design out every expense that did not serve the user. The 1980 Panda used flat glass everywhere, identical door panels, a single windscreen wiper, and a dashboard that was essentially a shelf with a fabric pocket slung under it. The rear seat was a hammock arrangement that could be folded into a bed, propped up as a parcel shelf, or removed altogether. The interior was designed to be hosed out.

Design and engineering

Giugiaro described it as a piece of domestic equipment rather than a fashion item, and the honesty was the appeal. It was slow and noisy and it did not pretend otherwise, and Italians bought it in enormous numbers for exactly that reason. It became the default car of small towns, farms and mountain roads.

In production

The version that made its reputation abroad was the 4x4, engineered with Steyr-Puch in Austria and introduced in 1983. It weighed almost nothing, had short overhangs and a proper transfer case, and could get up tracks that defeated far more serious machinery. Panda 4x4s are still working in the Alps and the Apennines four decades later.

Legacy

The name survived the original. A second generation arrived in 2003, a third in 2011, and the Panda became one of the best-selling cars in Italy for years at a stretch, still built and still cheap, with the recent Grande Panda moving the nameplate up into the supermini class. Very few designs conceived purely around cost have lasted this well.
