The Uno replaced the 127 in 1983 and rewrote the small-car formula while doing it. Where its rivals were low and wide, Giugiaro drew the Uno tall and narrow, with a steeply raked windscreen and a high roof, which produced far more interior room than the footprint suggested and a drag coefficient that was competitive despite the boxy look. It won European Car of the Year for 1984.

Under the bonnet, Fiat introduced the FIRE engine — Fully Integrated Robotised Engine — a design conceived to be built with far fewer parts and far less labour than the unit it replaced. It was light, economical and cheap to make, and versions of it stayed in production for decades across the Fiat group.

The Uno Turbo i.e. gave the range a genuinely quick version, and the standard cars sold in huge numbers across Europe through the 1980s. But the model's longest life was elsewhere: Fiat's Brazilian operation built the Uno for decades after European production ended, updating it repeatedly for a market where its simplicity and cheap running costs remained exactly right. Production of one version or another continued into the 2020s.

The Punto replaced it in Europe in 1993. The packaging idea — go tall, keep it light, use the height rather than the width — became standard practice for small cars everywhere.
