Force Motors had licensed Mercedes-Benz technology for years, and the Gurkha is what that relationship eventually produced for private buyers: a body-on-frame four-wheel-drive vehicle launched in 2008 with a Mercedes-derived 2.6-litre OM616 diesel, a five-speed manual gearbox with a proper transfer case, and — unusually at its price — differential locks front and rear.

That specification is the point. Nothing else sold in India at the money offered snorkel-ready wading depth, portal-free but genuinely capable axles and locking diffs as standard equipment. On road it was slow, loud and crude; off road it embarrassed vehicles costing several times as much, and it became the vehicle of choice for Indian off-road competition and for buyers who used their 4x4 as a tool rather than a statement.

Four distinct series have followed since 2008, built at Pithampur in Madhya Pradesh, with the fourth from 2021 adding a much-improved interior, better on-road manners and eventually a five-door body to broaden its appeal. It has never sold in the numbers the Mahindra Thar manages, but it has kept a specific and loyal constituency by not softening the parts that matter.
