Origins
The BS2 of 2008 extended Brilliance's passenger range downward: a compact hatchback-and-saloon family targeting the entry segment where China's volume lived, with the group's smaller fours and value equipment against Chery, Geely and the joint ventures' budget lines. European export intentions continued despite the crash-test bruising of its larger siblings. The BS2 competed adequately and anonymously; Brilliance's centre of gravity remained the BMW venture whose dividends increasingly defined the group — a dependence that would end in the parent's spectacular 2020s insolvency while the German partnership thrived. The BS2 stands for the self-owned business that never quite compounded: competent products, adverse comparisons, and a partner outgrowing its host. Its epitaph is the industry's oldest: adequate is not a strategy.
