Origins

Chevrolet had nothing to sell against the Mustang for two and a half years, and the Camaro was the corrective: a conventional front-engine, rear-drive coupe and convertible on the new F-body platform shared with the Pontiac Firebird. Asked what a Camaro was, a Chevrolet executive reportedly said it was a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs, which set the tone for the next half-century.

Design and engineering

The Z/28 mattered most. Built to meet Trans-Am racing's displacement limit, it turned the Camaro into a road racer rather than a straight-line car, and Mark Donohue's championships gave Chevrolet the credibility it needed. The 1970 second generation swapped Detroit brashness for something closer to a European grand tourer and, against expectations, survived the 1970s to become one of the best-selling cars of its type by the end of the decade.

In production

The 1982 third generation brought a hatchback body, fuel injection and a chassis that finally handled; the 1993 fourth generation brought the LT1 and later LS1 V8s. But the coupe market was collapsing around it, and production ended in 2002.

Legacy

The return in 2009 came from an unusual place: a concept car that appeared in the first Transformers film and generated more public demand than any focus group could have. Built on GM's rear-drive Zeta platform, then on the lighter Alpha architecture from 2016, the revived Camaro was widely judged the best-handling of the modern pony cars and the hardest to see out of. It ended again in 2024, leaving the Mustang alone in the segment.
