Origins

It started as a show car. The Corvette displayed at GM's 1953 Motorama drew enough of a reaction that Chevrolet built it, hurriedly, in Flint, Michigan: a fibreglass two-seater with a six-cylinder engine and an automatic gearbox, which was not what sports car buyers wanted. Sales were poor and the car came close to being cancelled in its third year.

Design and engineering

Two things saved it. One was the small-block V8 that arrived in 1955, giving the Corvette the performance its looks had promised. The other was Zora Arkus-Duntov, the engineer who spent the next two decades pushing it towards genuine capability: better brakes, fuel injection, independent rear suspension, and a persistent, ultimately unsuccessful campaign for a mid-engined layout. Bill Mitchell and Larry Shinoda's 1963 Sting Ray gave it a shape people still copy.

The generations that followed tracked America's fortunes closely. The C3, launched in 1968, sold in huge numbers and then spent the 1970s losing power to emissions rules while gaining weight. The C4 of 1983 was a technical restart with a new chassis and digital instruments. The C5, from 1997, was the one that made the car properly good again: a hydroformed perimeter frame, a rear-mounted transaxle for weight distribution, and the LS engine family that became a currency of its own in the aftermarket. The C6 and C7 refined the formula, added carbon fibre and magnetorheological dampers, and kept the price far below anything comparable from Europe. Racing ran alongside all of it: Chevrolet's factory Corvette programme took class honours at Le Mans repeatedly through the 2000s and 2010s, and at Daytona and Sebring, giving the road cars a credibility that advertising could not buy and a competition record few sports cars anywhere can match.

Legacy

The car's cultural life ran just as long. It was what the astronauts drove, what Route 66 was filmed around, and the standing American answer to the question of what a man buys when something in his life changes. That reputation cut both ways, and Chevrolet has spent decades making cars good enough to outrun the joke. Then, in 2020, Chevrolet finally did what Duntov had argued for since the 1950s and moved the engine behind the driver. The C8 kept the price structure that had always defined the car while delivering handling and acceleration that put it against European mid-engined machinery, and the range has since expanded into hybrid all-wheel-drive and flat-plane-crank track versions. Every Corvette since 1981 has been built at Bowling Green, Kentucky, and the car has now run continuously for over seventy years, longer than any other American sports car.
