Origins

Great Wall built its business on pickups while most Chinese manufacturers were chasing saloons, and the Wingle is the model that took that business abroad. A conventional ladder-frame pickup in single and crew cab forms, with 2.2 and 2.4-litre petrol fours and 2.0 and 2.8-litre diesels, it was cheap, tough and unambitious in exactly the way the market required.

Design and engineering

Its significance is in the assembly list. Alongside Baoding in China, Wingles have been put together from kits in Bulgaria, Iran, Indonesia and elsewhere, giving Great Wall a distribution footprint across markets where Japanese pickups had gone unchallenged for decades. Successive generations improved the cab, the diesel engines and the gearboxes, and the model line has since branched into the more upmarket Poer and Cannon ranges sold in Australia and South America. It replaced the Sailor, SoCool and Deer, and remains in production.
