Origins

When the Sportster appeared in 1957 it was Harley-Davidson's response to British twins that were embarrassing its heavyweights on American roads. Replacing the KHK, it paired an overhead-valve V-twin, the Ironhead, so called for its cast-iron cylinder heads, with a comparatively light frame, and for years it was the quickest thing the company made.

Design and engineering

Racing shaped its reputation. The XR-750, a Sportster-derived flat-track machine introduced in 1970, went on to dominate American dirt track for decades and became the most successful racing motorcycle in the country's history; it was also the bike Evel Knievel jumped. On the road, the XLCR café racer of 1977 sold badly and is sought after now precisely because it did.

In production

The Evolution engine replaced the Ironhead in 1986 and the model settled into a long, stable middle age, sold in 883 and 1200 cc capacities as the entry point to the brand and, for a long period, the bike most likely to be a rider's first Harley. Rubber engine mounting arrived in 2004, fuel injection followed, and the fundamentals did not move.

Legacy

That continuity ended in 2022, when emissions rules retired the air-cooled Evolution engine. The name passed to the Sportster S, powered by the liquid-cooled Revolution Max: a different motorcycle in almost every respect, carrying a badge in continuous use since 1957.
