Origins

The V-Rod was Harley-Davidson attempting to grow beyond its own customers, and it committed properly. The Revolution engine was a 60-degree, liquid-cooled, double-overhead-cam V-twin developed with Porsche Engineering and derived from the VR-1000 superbike programme, nothing like the air-cooled pushrod architecture the company had built for a century. It made its power high in the rev range and revved considerably further than any previous Harley.

Design and engineering

The chassis matched it. A hydroformed perimeter frame, a long wheelbase, a raked front end and a brushed aluminium finish gave the bike drag-strip proportions, and the radiator was styled rather than hidden. It arrived for 2002 with 1131 cc and grew to 1247 cc in 2008, with a five-speed gearbox and belt drive.

In production

Reception split in a way that proved decisive. Reviewers admired it and it found buyers who would never have considered a Softail, but Harley's core customers did not want a liquid-cooled engine or the riding position, and the Muscle and Night Rod variants never changed that. Production ended in 2017. Its real legacy is technical: the Revolution Max engines in the Pan America and Sportster S descend directly from this line of thinking.
