Origins

Iran Khodro launched the Samand in 2001 as the melli — national — car: a locally designed saloon on the proven Peugeot 405 platform the company had built for years, styled and engineered in Tehran with steadily rising domestic content. It became the state's rolling ambassador — taxi fleets ran it on factory dual-fuel CNG systems suited to Iran's gas wealth, and assembly spread to Belarus, Senegal, Syria and Venezuela as sanctions-era industrial diplomacy. Millions of Iranians learned to drive in one. Refined through Soren and later variants, the Samand's significance was never sophistication but statement: a sanctioned economy demonstrating it could productionise its own car, and export it — politics expressed in pressed steel.
