Origins
The Runna of 2010 extended Iran Khodro's national-car programme downward: a compact saloon developed in-house on shortened 206-derived underpinnings, intended to replace ageing Paykan-generation transport with something wholly Iranian in integration if not ancestry. Domestic engines, local styling and CNG options served the home market's realities; assembly agreements exported the design regionally. Like the Samand it prioritised robustness and serviceability over refinement, and Western reviews were beside the point — the Runna existed for buyers with no access to alternatives and a state determined to supply them domestically. In Iran's peculiar automotive ecosystem, where sanctions made every localised component a small victory, the Runna represented the programme maturing: less licence, more Tehran.
