Origins

BMW bought Rover in 1994, sold most of it in 2000, and kept one thing: the Mini name. The car it launched in 2001 was a deliberate reinterpretation rather than a revival. Front-wheel drive and a transverse four, as before, but larger in every dimension, close to twice the weight, far safer, and built to a premium standard the original never attempted.

Design and engineering

Frank Stephenson's styling quoted the 1959 car without copying it: wheels at the corners, a floating roof, a clamshell bonnet, a centre speedometer the size of a dinner plate. Underneath, the suspension was tuned for the tight, darty responses that made the original famous, and the go-kart cliche stuck because the car mostly earned it.

In production

The commercial insight was that customers would pay to personalise. Roof graphics, contrast mirrors, trim packs and colour combinations turned a small hatchback into a configurable object, and the margins followed. The range grew accordingly: Cooper, Cooper S with a supercharger and then a turbo from 2006, the John Cooper Works versions, a convertible, a coupe, a roadster and eventually a five-door.

Legacy

Three generations on, the same idea persists, now with a fully electric version. Purists point out that a modern three-door Hatch is longer than a classic Clubman estate. That is true, and it has not mattered. BMW built a profitable premium small-car business out of a badge the rest of the industry had written off.
