Origins

The XK and the XJ-S were grand tourers. The F-Type, launched as a roadster in 2013, was the first compact two-seat sports car Jaguar had built since the E-Type went out of production in 1974 — a point the company made repeatedly, and one that Ian Callum's design was careful not to lean on. There are no retro references in it; the proportions do the work.

Design and engineering

It used a shortened, riveted aluminium platform, and came first with supercharged V6s and a supercharged five-litre V8, later joined by a turbocharged four for buyers who wanted the shape more than the noise. All-wheel drive arrived in 2015, and a six-speed manual was briefly offered with the V6 — a rarity by then, and taken up by very few.

In production

The V8 cars are the ones people remember, largely for an exhaust deliberately tuned to crackle and bang on the overrun; Jaguar spent real engineering effort on that sound and was entirely unapologetic about it. Project 7, a limited-run speedster with a cut-down screen and a fairing behind the driver's head, referenced the D-Type more directly.

Legacy

Production ran to June 2024, ending with V8-only special editions as Jaguar closed its Castle Bromwich line and stopped building cars altogether ahead of an electric relaunch. For now, it is the last Jaguar sports car.
