Origins

Chrysler introduced the ZJ Grand Cherokee at the Detroit show in January 1992 by having its president drive one up the steps and through a plate-glass window of Cobo Hall. The theatre was warranted: the vehicle had been developed under AMC, inherited in the takeover, and was what Chrysler was counting on.

Design and engineering

It was a unibody SUV like the Cherokee it sat above, but with coil-sprung live axles, a far more car-like interior and the option of full-time four-wheel drive that asked nothing of the driver. That combination — off-road hardware, on-road manners, and an interior that could justify a premium price — turned out to be the mainstream of the SUV market for the next thirty years.

In production

Each generation moved further upmarket. The WJ of 1999 was better built; the WK of 2005 offered a Hemi V8 and an SRT8 version; the WK2 of 2011, drawing on Mercedes-Benz platform work and finished under Fiat, was the one that finally made the Grand Cherokee credible against German rivals, and it spawned the supercharged Trackhawk. The WL of 2021 added a three-row L variant and a plug-in hybrid.

Legacy

It has always been Jeep's profit centre, and it has always carried a slightly uncomfortable double identity: sold overwhelmingly to buyers who will never leave tarmac, while remaining, in Trailhawk form, genuinely capable of the terrain the badge implies.
