Origins
In 2019 Volkswagen's Chinese joint venture with FAW performed brand alchemy: Jetta — for decades a beloved model name synonymous with durable German transport — became a standalone marque for value-seeking buyers, and the VS5 crossover launched it: a Tharu-related SUV on proven MQB-derived architecture, decontented and priced against Chinese domestic brands rather than international rivals. The gamble addressed VW's exposure at the market's price-sensitive base, where local marques were consolidating. Early sales validated the channel — buyers accepted a Chinese-market-only German-lineage brand at Chinese prices. The VS5 thus carries strategic weight beyond its class: the moment Volkswagen conceded that defending China's entry segment required shedding its own badge's cost. Few badge decisions in the modern industry carried more symbolism, or worked faster.
