Origins

Aion began as the electric sub-brand of Guangzhou Automobile Group before being spun out as a marque in its own right, and the LX was its flagship: a mid-size five-door SUV built in Guangzhou from 2019, offered with a single front motor or a dual-motor all-wheel-drive arrangement, driving through a single-speed transmission.

Design and engineering

Its selling point was range. Chinese manufacturers competed hard on rated distance in this period, and the LX carried some of the largest battery packs in its class, with headline figures under the domestic test cycle that few rivals could match on paper. Later Plus versions pushed the specification further still.

In production

The car itself was conventional in layout and generously equipped rather than radical, and it has stayed a domestic-market product. It matters chiefly as the point at which GAC demonstrated it could engineer a large electric car without leaning on a foreign partner.
