Origins

The 2110 project began in the late 1980s as a more modern replacement for the Samara: a front-wheel-drive four-door saloon with a rounded body, flush glazing and fuel injection. Then the Soviet Union collapsed. Development stalled for want of money, and the car did not reach production at Togliatti until 1995, by which point its styling had aged and Western imports were arriving in Russia in quantity.

Design and engineering

An estate, the 2111, and a hatchback, the 2112, followed in 1997, with a coupe version from 1999. The range was assembled in Russia and, under licence, in Egypt, Romania and Ukraine, with Egyptian production of the saloon continuing until 2015.

In production

It was never an export success, but at home the 110 series did useful work: it was the first AvtoVAZ car designed entirely without Fiat's shadow over it, and its platform underpinned the Priora that replaced it in 2007.
