Brand History
The Lada Story
Lada is the brand of AvtoVAZ, the giant Soviet car plant established at Tolyatti in 1966 in cooperation with Fiat. Its first product, the Fiat 124-based VAZ-2101 'Zhiguli', became the definitive Soviet family car, and the 1977 Niva was a pioneering unibody 4x4 that remains in production in updated form. Renault progressively took control of AvtoVAZ in the 2010s but exited Russia in 2022, returning the company to state-linked ownership.
