Origins

The Vesta was the clearest sign of what the Renault-Nissan alliance's involvement in AvtoVAZ was meant to achieve. Design was led by Steve Mattin, who had come to Lada in 2011 after senior roles at Mercedes-Benz and Volvo, and the car that appeared in 2015 looked unlike anything the company had produced. The X-shaped graphic across the nose and tail was a deliberate identity, applied consistently across the range afterward.

Design and engineering

Underneath, the Vesta is a conventional front-engined, front-wheel-drive compact saloon, with an estate version and a raised Cross variant. Engines are 1.6 and 1.8-litre four-cylinder units, with a five-speed manual, an automated manual or a CVT. Assembly is at Izhevsk.

In production

What mattered was the standard of finish and the driving experience, both of which reviewers judged to be a real advance rather than a relative one. For the first time in a long while a Lada was being compared with Renault Logans and used imports on something other than price.

Legacy

The sanctions imposed after 2022 forced AvtoVAZ to strip out foreign-sourced components, and early post-sanction cars went on sale without airbags or anti-lock brakes before those systems were restored. The Vesta remains the company's flagship.
