Origins

Lifan — Chongqing's motorcycle giant, its founder Yin Mingshan a reform-era legend — entered car production in 2006 with the 520: a compact saloon (and 520i hatch) powered by proven fours, priced for the entry market, and exported aggressively to the developing world where Lifan's motorcycle networks already reached. Russia, South America and Africa became its real markets; at home it contested the crowded value segment. The 520 established Lifan's automotive pattern — modest products, motorcycle-channel distribution, emerging-market focus — that sustained the venture until the late-2010s crisis bankrupted the group, whose remnants Geely absorbed into the Livan venture. The first car remains the clearest expression of the founder's simple thesis: where the motorcycles sold, cars would follow.
