01

Origins

For most of the 2010s Lincoln named its cars with two letters and a K, which nobody could keep straight and which conveyed nothing. The Nautilus is a product of the retreat from that policy: it is the Lincoln MKX, given a facelift, a new grille and a proper name for the 2019 model year. Underneath sits the Ford Edge, with transverse engines and front or all-wheel drive.

Design and engineering

The second generation, launched for 2024, is a more substantial change than the first. It is built in China by Ford's joint venture there and shipped to North America, which is unusual for a mainstream American luxury model, and its cabin is dominated by a display running the full width of the windscreen base with a smaller touchscreen below it, the most aggressive screen layout Lincoln has attempted.

In production

It sells in the largest and most competitive segment Lincoln contests, against German and Japanese rivals with far stronger badges, and it does so mainly on equipment, comfort and price rather than on driving dynamics.
