Origins

When Mahindra started work on the Scorpio in the late 1990s, it had never designed a vehicle from scratch. Everything it built descended from Willys Jeeps assembled under licence since the 1940s. The company set up a small in-house team under Pawan Goenka, worked closely with suppliers who took on design responsibility for their own components, and delivered a complete new SUV on a development budget that was a fraction of what an established manufacturer would have spent.

Design and engineering

The result, launched in June 2002, was a body-on-frame mid-size SUV with a turbocharged diesel engine, rear-wheel drive as standard and four-wheel drive optional. It was aimed at buyers moving up from the Bolero and at families who wanted something more car-like inside than a converted utility vehicle, and it was priced well below the imported and joint-venture alternatives.

In production

It worked. The Scorpio established Mahindra as a vehicle manufacturer rather than an assembler, funded the engineering capability that led to later models, and was exported to Africa, South America and parts of Europe. It has been in continuous production since, and when a wholly new Scorpio-N arrived in 2022 Mahindra kept building the older car alongside it as the Scorpio Classic, because demand for it had not gone anywhere.
