Everything Mahindra had built until 2011 traced back to a ladder frame. The XUV500 broke that habit: a monocoque crossover, front-wheel drive as standard with all-wheel drive available, developed in-house at Chakan and aimed squarely at buyers who wanted seven seats and SUV presence without the ride quality of a farm vehicle.

The styling brief came from Peter Stevens, the British designer whose CV includes the McLaren F1 and the Lotus Esprit. He and the Mahindra studio worked to a cheetah theme that was carried through in detail — the door handles shaped like a paw, a haunch over the rear wheel, a deliberately animal stance. It was not subtle, and it was not meant to be. Indian buyers had been offered plenty of restrained boxes; nobody had offered them a large seven-seater with this much character at the price.

Under the bonnet sat Mahindra's own mHawk turbodiesel in 2.2-litre form, later joined by a 1.99-litre version created to duck a Delhi ban on larger diesels, and eventually a turbo petrol. Equipment levels were the real weapon: at launch the XUV500 undercut established rivals by a wide margin while offering more kit than either.

Bookings had to be suspended within days of opening. The car ran for a decade with two facelifts, was exported to Australia, South Africa and Italy with mixed results, and gave Mahindra its first credible modern passenger platform. Its replacement, the XUV700, arrived in 2021.
