Origins

Mahindra has been building Jeeps since 1949, when the firm began assembling Willys CJ-3B kits in Bombay. That licence turned into a lineage: the CJ series became the MM range, and the MM530 soldiered on into the 2000s as a utilitarian farm-and-forest machine with a hard life and few concessions to comfort. When it finally ran out of road against tightening emissions and safety rules, Mahindra replaced it in 2010 with the Thar.

Design and engineering

The first Thar was still a rough instrument, closer to a tool than a lifestyle vehicle: a body-on-frame two-door with part-time four-wheel drive, a soft top, and a following among people who actually needed low range. What changed the car's meaning was the second generation, launched in 2020. It kept the ladder frame, the live rear axle and the transfer case, but wrapped them in a properly finished cabin with a touchscreen, air conditioning and crash structure that could pass modern homologation. Mahindra had worked out that the people buying a Thar mostly wanted the idea of the Himalayas on a Tuesday commute, and priced it accordingly.

In production

Demand outran the factory almost immediately, with waiting lists running into months. The formula has since been stretched in both directions: a rear-wheel-drive version for buyers who wanted the look without the hardware, and in 2024 the five-door Thar ROXX, which added rear doors and a longer wheelbase to make it a usable family car. It remains a compact SUV by class, and one of the very few affordable new vehicles anywhere still built the old way, with a separate frame and a genuine transfer case.
