Origins

The Gypsy was Maruti's licence-built version of the Suzuki SJ410, launched in 1985: a two-door off-roader with a separate ladder frame, leaf springs, part-time four-wheel drive with low range, and a soft or hard top. Early cars used the 1.0-litre F10A four; later King versions moved to 1.3-litre G13 engines, the last of them fuel-injected.

Design and engineering

Its advantage over the heavier Jeep-derived machines it competed with was weight. A Gypsy carried so little of it that a modest engine and skinny tyres could take it up terrain that defeated more powerful rivals, and if it did get stuck a few soldiers could lift it. That combination made it the Indian Army's standard light vehicle, ordered in tens of thousands and still in service long after civilian sales ended; it also served police forces and border units across the country.

In production

In motorsport it was close to unbeatable. Indian rally raids of the 1990s and 2000s were dominated by Gypsys, and the model developed a devoted modifying culture around it.

Legacy

Civilian production ended in 2018 when it could no longer meet safety and emissions rules, with army supply continuing a little longer. The fourth-generation Suzuki Jimny, launched in India in 2023, is its acknowledged successor.
