Origins

By 1993, Maruti had a decade of the 800 behind it and needed something more ambitious. The Zen was built on the Suzuki Cervo Mode platform and came with a 993 cc four-cylinder engine, an all-aluminium unit that was light, willing and unusually smooth for the class. Compared with the 800 it was a different order of car: quieter, faster, better finished, and with handling crisp enough that owners drove it for pleasure rather than necessity.

Design and engineering

Its rounded, high-tailed shape was distinctive in a market accustomed to boxes, and it aged well. Enthusiasts still hunt out early carburettor cars for their low weight; the later 16-valve fuel-injected engine made the point more emphatically.

In production

The Zen also mattered for what it did outside India. Cars built at Gurgaon were exported to Europe and sold there as the Suzuki Alto, the first time an Indian-built passenger car was shipped in volume to demanding Western markets. That gave Maruti's plant credibility as a global manufacturing site rather than a licensed assembler.

Legacy

Production ran to 2006. The Zen Estilo that replaced it kept the name but not the character, and the model that genuinely inherited the brief — a small, light, keenly driven Maruti hatchback — was arguably the Swift.
