Origins

The Voyager name first appeared in 1974 on a conventional full-size van, but the car that matters arrived in 1984. Chrysler was emerging from a government-backed rescue and needed a product nobody else had. Hal Sperlich had been pushing a compact people-carrier concept for years, including at Ford, where it was rejected; he and Lee Iacocca both ended up at Chrysler, and the idea came with them.

Design and engineering

The execution was the insight. Instead of shortening a commercial van, the Voyager and its Dodge Caravan twin were built on a stretched version of the front-wheel-drive K-car passenger platform. That meant a flat floor with no propshaft tunnel, a low step-in height, car-like driving position and handling, and overall dimensions that fitted an ordinary American garage. Seven people and their luggage went inside something that drove like a saloon.

In production

It created a segment. Sales were immediate and enormous, every competitor spent the following decade responding, and the profits funded much of Chrysler's recovery through the 1980s. The 1996 generation added the sliding door on the driver's side that rivals had to match.

Legacy

The Voyager outlived its own brand. Plymouth was wound down in 2001 and the model continued as a Chrysler, in Europe as the Chrysler Voyager and later under Lancia badging. Few vehicles have so completely defined how a category is supposed to work.
