Origins

Porsche announced in the late 1990s that it would build a large sport utility vehicle, and the reaction from its own customers was close to hostile. The company was three years out of a near-death experience, had no experience of off-road vehicles, and had just staked its recovery on the Boxster. Building a two-and-a-half tonne five-door seemed like a category error.

Design and engineering

It was, instead, the most consequential decision in Porsche's modern history. The Cayenne went on sale in August 2002, developed jointly with Volkswagen on a platform shared with the Touareg, which spread the enormous cost of an E-segment SUV programme across two companies. Porsche's contribution was the chassis tuning and the engines, including a Turbo version quick enough to embarrass sports cars, and the result drove far better on a road than anything of its size had a right to.

In production

Commercially it was transformative. The Cayenne outsold the 911 almost immediately and became, with the Macan that followed, the profit engine that funds Porsche's sports car development, its motorsport programme and its more speculative projects. Later generations lost weight, gained hybrid and then plug-in hybrid options, and refined the styling that had been the first car's weakest feature. It was also a real off-road vehicle rather than a styling exercise, engineered with a two-speed transfer case, locking differentials and genuine wading depth, equipment almost no owner would ever use but which settled the question of whether Porsche had done the job properly.
