The B7 is Alpina's version of BMW's largest saloon, and the G12 generation built from 2016 to 2022 was the most widely sold. It used the long-wheelbase body and BMW's 4.4-litre N63 V8, reworked with new turbochargers, revised cooling and Alpina's own engine management, driving the rear wheels or all four through xDrive by way of an eight-speed ZF automatic.

The interesting part is commercial rather than technical. Bodies were assembled at Dingolfing and finished at Buchloe, and in the United States the B7 was sold through BMW dealers with a full factory warranty - a rare arrangement that put a small German manufacturer's product on the same footing as a regular model. For American buyers it became the fast 7-Series, since BMW no longer offered an M version of the car.

Alpina's treatment suited it well: comfortably quicker than the standard 750i, quieter and softer than anything equivalent from Mercedes-AMG, and invisible as a special model to anyone who did not recognise the wheels.
