Origins

By the late 1990s Saturn had a loyal base of small-car owners and nothing to sell them when they wanted something larger. The L-Series, built at Wilmington, Delaware from May 1999, was the answer: a mid-size sedan and LW station wagon adapted from Opel's Vectra rather than engineered from scratch, with the 2.2-litre Ecotec four or a 3.0-litre V6 driving the front wheels.

Design and engineering

It kept the polymer door panels and the no-haggle showroom, but the car underneath felt like what it was, a European saloon reworked for American tastes without quite satisfying either. Sales never approached what the segment could support, the wagon was dropped early, and production ended in June 2004. The Aura replaced it in 2007, and did the job considerably better.
