Origins
SEAT's role inside the Volkswagen Group was defined in the late 1990s as the sporting brand, and the Leon is where that decision took physical form. Launched in October 1999 on the same platform as the Golf Mk4, it was offered initially as a five-door hatchback only, with the more aggressive styling and firmer settings that were supposed to distinguish a SEAT from an Audi, a Skoda or a Volkswagen built on identical hardware.
