Suzuki's earlier off-roaders were kei-class machines with the ride quality that implied. The Vitara of 1988 kept a separate chassis and rear-wheel drive with selectable four-wheel drive, but grew to a size and refinement level that made it usable as an only car, and packaged it with soft-top and hardtop bodies that read as leisure equipment rather than agricultural kit.

That positioning found a market that had not previously existed. Sold as the Escudo in Japan, the Sidekick in the United States and the Geo Tracker through General Motors dealers, it put small four-wheel drives in suburban driveways years before the compact SUV became a category. The Grand Vitara that followed added more space and, eventually, a monocoque with permanent four-wheel drive.

The name has since travelled a long way from its origins. Since 2015 the Vitara has been a front-wheel-drive subcompact crossover built on a car platform, with four-wheel drive as an option. It sells well, but the original's combination of a ladder frame and a folding roof no longer has an equivalent.
