Origins
The Alto launched in 1979 as a piece of tax engineering. By registering it as a commercial van rather than a passenger car, with a flat load floor and no rear seat to speak of, Suzuki could sell it in Japan under a lower tax rate and at a headline price that undercut everything. It sold enormously, and it forced the rest of the kei market to answer.
