Origins

The Alto launched in 1979 as a piece of tax engineering. By registering it as a commercial van rather than a passenger car, with a flat load floor and no rear seat to speak of, Suzuki could sell it in Japan under a lower tax rate and at a headline price that undercut everything. It sold enormously, and it forced the rest of the kei market to answer.

Design and engineering

Underneath, the recipe was as plain as possible: a tiny front-mounted engine, front-wheel drive, minimal weight and no equipment that could be left out. Later generations offered four-wheel drive and, in some markets, turbocharged Works versions with far more performance than the bodyshell suggested.

In production

What gives the Alto reach beyond Japan is licensing. Versions of Suzuki's small-car architecture underpinned the Maruti 800 in India, which motorised an entire generation of Indian households, and the Alto name itself has been used on A-segment city cars sold across Europe and Asia. It has been in production continuously since 1979, which is a long run for a car designed around a loophole.
