Origins

Tata owns Jaguar Land Rover, and the Harrier is the clearest case of that ownership paying off in the parent company's own showrooms. Its OMEGA platform is a reworked version of the D8 architecture that underpins the Land Rover Discovery Sport, adapted by Tata for Indian conditions and cost targets, and the launch engine was the Fiat-derived 2.0-litre Multijet diesel in Tata's Kryotec tune.

Design and engineering

Pratap Bose's team gave it a deliberately imposing shape with a split headlamp arrangement, and it went on sale in 2019 as a front-wheel-drive five-door built at Ranjangaon near Pune. The absence of four-wheel drive drew criticism given the styling promises, but the ride quality and structural solidity that came with the Land Rover-derived hardware were widely praised.

In production

A facelift under Martin Uhlarik added an automatic gearbox and considerably more equipment, and a petrol option followed with a 1.5-litre turbocharged direct-injection four. The Harrier gave Tata credibility at a price point it had not previously reached, and it sits above the Nexon as the brand's flagship.
