Origins
Toyota started the project that became the Prius in the early 1990s with a question rather than a technology: what should a car for the twenty-first century be. The answer the company settled on was a large improvement in fuel efficiency, and the target set for the engineers was roughly double the economy of a conventional car of the same size, which no combination of incremental improvements could deliver.
