Origins
Yangwang launched in 2023 with the U8: BYD's luxury marque announcing itself with a quad-motor off-road flagship whose e4 platform performed tank turns on the spot and — in emergencies — float mode, sealing and propelling the two-and-a-half-tonne SUV across water. At around a million yuan it shattered Chinese price ceilings and sold anyway, its technology theatre backed by genuine engineering depth. The U8's mission was symbolic warfare: proof that China's largest EV maker could command G-Wagen money with capabilities Stuttgart never offered. It worked — the U8 became the country's best-selling vehicle above the million-yuan line, and Chinese luxury acquired its first true native flagship. Flagships are arguments, and the U8 won its argument in eighteen months.
