Origins

Zotye's SR7 of 2015 practised the company's signature craft: a compact crossover whose styling borrowed so faithfully from a German premium original that showrooms reportedly re-badged them for irony. The Yongkang manufacturer had industrialised the homage — affordable clones of aspirational designs for buyers who wanted the look decades before the means — and the SR7 sold on exactly that proposition. Intellectual-property pressure and rising domestic design standards were already closing the model's window. Zotye's later collapse into restructuring ended the strategy's foremost practitioner. The SR7 survives as the copycat era's late artefact: proof of the appetite, dated evidence of the approach, and a measure of how fast China's market outgrew both.
