Brand History
The Oldsmobile Story
Oldsmobile was founded by Ransom E. Olds in Lansing, Michigan in 1897, and its Curved Dash runabout became the first mass-produced automobile built on a progressive assembly line. The brand joined General Motors in 1908 and served for decades as a mid-range innovator, introducing the Rocket V8 in 1949, an early fully automatic transmission in 1940, and front-wheel drive on the 1966 Toronado. It was among America's best-selling brands in the 1970s and 1980s with models like the Cutlass.
