Origins

Pontiac created the muscle car market with the GTO in 1964, and Oldsmobile answered within months. The 442 arrived as a police-oriented option package on the F-85 and Cutlass, and its name was a parts list: a four-barrel carburettor, a four-speed manual and dual exhausts. When the specification changed, the explanation changed with it, and by the late 1960s the badge was said to stand for the 400 cubic inch engine, the four-barrel and the dual pipes.

Design and engineering

Oldsmobile's version of the formula was more considered than most. The cars generally had better suspension and brakes than their rivals and rode with more composure, which suited a division whose customers expected a degree of civility. The W-30 package added serious engine work and cold-air induction, and from 1968 Hurst Performance built a low-volume Hurst/Olds with the largest engine and a shifter to match.

In production

It was a separate model from 1968 to 1971, then reverted to an option as insurance rates and emissions rules gutted the segment. The name reappeared on much milder cars in the 1980s and early 1990s, attached to front-wheel-drive machinery that shared nothing with the originals except the digits.
