01

Origins

By the early 1990s Oldsmobile's problem was its name, so the Aurora was launched almost without it. There is no Oldsmobile script anywhere on the car, only the rocket emblem, and the styling deliberately avoided every General Motors convention: a low, curved roofline, a rounded nose with no grille, and a wraparound rear window.

Design and engineering

Under the bonnet was a genuinely new 4.0-litre V8 developed alongside Cadillac's Northstar, driving the front wheels through an automatic. The engine had a second career: a racing derivative was adopted as the specification engine for the Indy Racing League from 1997, and versions of it powered Indianapolis 500 winners, an unusual credential for a division associated with retirees.

In production

The car was competent, well built and well received, but it did not do what it was launched to do. Oldsmobile's decline continued, a second generation arrived in 2001, and General Motors announced the division's closure while it was still on sale.

It is worth looking at now as the last serious engineering effort made by an American marque that was already being wound down.
