Origins

For 1949 Oldsmobile had two things: a new high-compression overhead-valve V8 called the Rocket, and a smaller, lighter body shell used by the six-cylinder 76. Putting the first into the second produced the 88, and the formula, a large engine in a mid-size car, is the one Detroit spent the next twenty years rediscovering.

Design and engineering

It made itself known immediately in stock car racing, winning the great majority of the 1949 NASCAR season and taking the first championship. It also made itself known in music: Rocket 88, recorded in 1951 by Jackie Brenston with Ike Turner's band, is routinely cited as one of the first rock and roll records, and it is about this car.

In production

The name then settled into a long career as Oldsmobile's core full-size model, running through Super 88, Dynamic 88, Delta 88 and Royale variants, absorbing every shift in American taste from fins to downsizing. In 1986 it went to front-wheel drive along with the rest of General Motors' large cars, and it finally ended in 1999 as the division itself was being wound up.

Legacy

Fifty model years is a long life for any nameplate. But the significance is concentrated in the first one, when a conservative middle-class marque briefly built the quickest thing on the American road.
