Davis bought Italian, and fast. The Ferrari came first; the Lamborghini nearly ended him. In October 1972 he crashed his Miura at sixty coming off New York's West Side Highway, broke both ankles and wrote the car off — an accident whose painkillers contributed to the years of ill health that pushed him into a long retirement from music.
