01

Origins

By 2000 Bajaj was in trouble. Its scooter business, built on the Chetak, was collapsing as Indian buyers moved to motorcycles, and the motorcycles Bajaj could offer were licensed designs. The Pulsar, launched in 2001, was the company's attempt to develop something aspirational largely in-house, with outside help on styling from a Japanese consultancy.

Design and engineering

It arrived in 150 cc and 180 cc forms, with a muscular tank, a broad stance and more performance than the 100 cc commuters that dominated the market, at a price far below the imported alternatives. In 2003 came DTS-i, a twin-spark combustion system that improved efficiency and became the brand's technical signature, appearing on almost everything Bajaj sold afterwards. The advertising, built around the line Definitely Male, was aimed squarely at young riders who wanted a motorcycle rather than transport.

In production

It worked comprehensively. The Pulsar created and then dominated a performance-commuter segment that had not existed, and it remains in production more than two decades later across a range running from 125 cc singles to liquid-cooled 250s, some drawing on the engineering Bajaj gained through its stake in KTM. Bajaj is a motorcycle company today because of this one model.
