01

Origins

Changan traces its origins to a nineteenth-century arsenal and spent decades building military vehicles and small commercial trucks, much of its passenger-car experience coming from licensed Suzuki designs. The Benni, launched in 2006, was among the first cars Changan developed largely on its own account.

02

Design and engineering

It was a conventional five-door A-segment hatchback built in Chongqing, aimed at first-time buyers in Chinese cities at a price well below the joint-venture products from Volkswagen and General Motors. That was enough: cheap, small and adequately built, it sold in large numbers through the boom years of Chinese car ownership and stayed in production, through several restyles and an electric derivative, until 2023.

In production

Its significance is domestic rather than technical. The Benni established Changan as a credible independent brand rather than a partner for foreign firms, and funded the engineering that produced the Eado and the CS-series SUVs.
