Origins
The Bel Air name appeared in 1950 on a pillarless hardtop coupe — a body style designed to look like a convertible with the roof up, and one of the most successful pieces of American product planning of the decade. By 1953 it had become Chevrolet's top series, applied across sedans, coupes, convertibles and wagons.
